Food for thought -- eating your way to sexual health

Substances in tomatoes, watermelon have positive effects on sexual health in men and women

In the midst of the recent controversy surrounding some possible serious side effects of impotence drugs like Viagra, we find this article especially interesting.

Did you know that there are naturally occurring substances in various fruits and vegetables that can boost fertility, diminish your chance of prostate cancer, and even have the same effects as Viagra (without the side effects)? Lycopene, found in tomatoes, pink grapefruit, and the red fleshy part of watermelons, may help enhance male fertility and protect against prostate cancer. Citrulline, found in the white rind of watermelon, can have effects similar to Viagra in the body -- namely, increasing erectile function.

Eating lots of healthy foods like watermelon and tomatoes, along with all the other foods that make up a well-balanced diet, is also important because it can lower your risk of STIs. The healthier your body is, the less susceptible to infection it is -- and if you already have an STI like herpes or HPV (genital warts), eating a healthy diet can help you experience fewer outbreaks.

It all goes to show that diet is an important part of an overall healthy lifestyle that will keep our sexual function at its best.
