The city of San Francisco recently started using an innovative new program that allows teens to receive sexual health information via text message on their cell phones. An article on the program can be found here.
How it works: Teens text the word "sexinfo" to a specific local phone number, and receive a message back asking them to narrow their question down to a more specific area of health -- for example, "condom broke" or "STD testing". After the teen sends this information, they get another text message with information on the topic they requested.
For example: texting for information about STDs would return a message such as "if u hve sex, u can get an STD + not know it. Chlamydia, gonorrhea=no symptoms most of the time Dropin get chcked FREE", followed by the address, phone number and hours of a local health clinic.
This program is based on a similar program in London.
