Semen May Worsen Cervical and Uterine Cancers

A new study finds that semen may aggravate uterine and cervical cancers because it contains highly concentrated amounts of a hormone called prostoglandin. Therefore, says Dr. Henry Jabbour, head of the study, "sexually active women who are at risk of cervical or uterine cancer should encourage their partners to wear a condom to prevent increased exposure to the prostaglandins that may make their condition worse." Another cancer expert dismisses this advice, and counters that the risk posed by semen is slight. He claims that the best prevention of cervical and uterine cancers is regular Pap smears (and, we might add, using barriers to protect yourself from HPV, the virus that causes cervical cancer).
