Ask Dr. Myrtle : Anatomy of Sexuality

Abnormally large clitoris?

Dear Dr. Myrtle,
I know that every woman is built differently. But is a extra large clit a rare thing? Mine kind of looks like the head of a baby boy's penis and is about 1/2 inch long. My female doctor never says anything about it, so maybe she's seen this before. The reason I'm asking is that I like adult videos and magazines, and I can hardly tell where the ladies' clits began or end.

It's true that the clitoris varies greatly from woman to woman. Some of it depends on what hormones you were exposed to when you were a fetus, and some of it is just chance. While your clitoris seems larger than average, that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it. In fact, having a large clit means you and your partners can find it much more easily, avoiding the "help, where is it, I can't find it" phenomenon.

As for why you can't see the clitoris of most women in the adult film industry - well, some women just have small clits, and others need to be sexually aroused for the clit to be visible. Many of the women who work in the industry do not become very aroused during the shooting of a scene (I wouldn't, either, with all those people and cameras around me!) so their clits don't stand up much. Recently I saw a film in which one of the actresses actually had a large clitoris, and it showed prominently. What a treat!

Maybe looking at some different erotic pictures, in which you can see women's clits, would be fun for you, too. The book Femalia is a lovely book of pictures of real women's vulvas. Some are shaved; others are furry; some are pierced; some have large clits; some have small clits. It's refreshing to see a wide variety of women's vulvas. Another book you might want to look at is A New View of a Woman's Body, which talks about all the splendid variation in women's anatomy.

So enjoy your body, and rest assured that you have a normal body (normal being anything where your body functions as it should).

Dr. Myrtle
