Description:
DVD onlyIn this DVD, a group of professional actors (representing a variety of ethnic, sexual and gender identities & orientations) portray sexual abuse survivors in intimate moments. The scenes show what happens when they are triggered by memories, demonstrating habitual reactions as well as portraying them in therapy/workshop sessions. Leader Staci Haines (author of Healing Sex) is a very thorough and kind somatic healer and she shares her own survival story -- her willingness to share is very comforting. Her communication and healing skills are brilliant, and she never patronizes or pushes any of the survivors. She teaches them to dig deep and feel out any pain or negative energy they're holding in while raising awareness of those feelings and maintaining control of one's self. Some scenes are re-enactments of intimate moments the survivors share with their partners or themselves and their subsequent reactions and behaviors. Other scenes are in a workshop setting as Staci clearly and calmly communicates self-awareness and honest discoveries.
Her healing process goes through the body, as demonstrated in workshop exercises and therapeutic settings, and promotes safety for the survivor, enabling him/her to regain control of his/her mind and body. There are some very angry survivors, and Staci mirrors their energy in controlled exercises and environments. As one survivor states, "[It's difficult to become intimate because] my whole sex life [revolves] around abuse." Staci discusses triggers and provides a plan for how to react when they are occur: 1) Stop 2) Breathe 3) Choose -- change activities, engage in sexual healing, center and continue sex There are a few passionate moments (lesbian and heterosexual) shared with the camera, and the healing process allows the survivors to get very aroused (one reviewer commented that they were very strong yet intimate). Some scenes vividly depict a survivor's fear, anger or confusion as s/he tries to heal. One of Staci's responses: "You bumped into this piece of history ... while healing -- that's okay!"
Our reviewers have found this video wonderfully compassionate and helpful for survivors, their partners, or anyone hoping to gain an awareness of the healing processes that survivors and their partners go through.
