This is a semi-historical romance that tells the story of a writer who writes hot romances, but has no romantic interest in her own life. We join her as she flashes to scenes from her Civil War romance novel, full of erotic sex and passion. Her own life starts getting more interesting, love-wise, and the result is lots of lusty pairings in both time periods.
This story, directed by former adult star Veronica Hart, is spicy hot and romantic, with a plot that is not too distracting (other than the tattoos on the Civil War era characters...) and helps make sense of the sex scenes. This rates high on our list of romantic couples' films when you are looking for something fully explicit (yes, you will see external ejaculations), but softer than the typical mainstream adult fare. Definitely woman-friendly, and meant for all those romance novel fans out there.

Veronica Hart's distinct directorial style is showcased in Love's Passions. There are plenty of sappy montages, heartbroken female leads, horny female friends, and lots of slow jazzy music.
Hart's films always feel like a cross between soap operas and romance novels. The female lead, played by girl next door type Juli Ashton, is an author who can't quite get her new novel off of the ground because she is trying to get over being abandoned by her boyfriend, a fellow author. Ashton's character slips into a world of fantasy where her longing for her ex plays out as a Civil War drama. She is a young lady waiting loyally for the safe return of her husband who by all accounts is probably dead. In real life, Ashton's character is counseled by many friends, as well as pressured by her publisher, to move on with her life so she can finish her book. Will her dreams come true if her returns in real life? Having him return may be harder than she ever expected.
Love's Passions is one of the better made films, production-wise. The costumes are nice. The lighting is good. The sets are fitting. The acting leaves a bit to the imagination. The period speak is awkward, but that is because people don't generally talk like that. The sex scenes in the movie are very mainstream, which goes against the stereotypically demure female directorial style made famous by powerhouse lady-filmmaker Candida Royalle. The period scenes are sweet and slow, like honey. They are dimly lit and the couples take time out to really enjoy each other. They reflect the love between two character whereas the modern scenes are all casual encounters. The modern day scenes are rough and a bit edgy, like one of the earlier scenes where a man directs his wife's love making to another man. You can have a lot of fun with the multiple camera angle feature on that scene. There is a nice mixture of threesomes. One of them follows a gratuitous lingerie party. That scene also contains the only toy use throughout the movie. The film is full of genital close-ups and cum shots. There is condom use, even during the period scenes (yay to post-antebellum prophylactics.)
Overall, they sex scenes are pretty good, the acting is okay, and the production values are pretty good.
I would recommend this film to people who like Veronica Hart films or fans of Juli Ashton. It also may be good for fans of soap operas.
Scenes of special interest- lots of oral sex on males and females, group sex- 2f+1m, 2m+1f, 3f, use of vibrators in one scene, and anal penetration of a woman.
